It works very simple. You specify TV diagonal (in inches) and the calculator calculates the distance (in meters) between viewer and the screen. Then you compare this distance with the size of the room. Thus, you can choose some of the most suitable for you TV diagonals and go to the store.
The principle of determining recommended distance
This is one of the most contentious issues. However, experts advise to watch TV from a distance equal to four - six of its diagonals. This calculator uses the coefficient of five. Thus, the calculated value is only a recommendation.
Also, keep in mind that the audience in the room will be located at different distances from the screen. Therefore, it is desirable to determine the range of distances and choose LCD or plasma TV on the mean basis.
Calculation of minimum distances
As you know, the image in the LCD or plasma TV is formed of dots which are called pixels. If you sit very close to the screen, you can easily see them. Naturally, the picture looks very granular.
Thus, it is desirable to watch TV from a distance at which the individual pixels are not visible and the picture looks smooth.
Human eye structure allows us to distinguish between objects that have dimensions less than one minute of arc.
On this basis we can calculate minimum distance between viewer and TV screen.
But there are nuances. Modern TVs have higher resolutions, for example, 1366x768 or 1920x1080 pixels. But this does not mean that the picture you see on the screen, will have this resolution. TV picture is made up of 720 pixels horizontally and 576 - vertically. Modern televisions use a special interpolation algorithms, which allow you to "stretch" the image and avoid the appearance of grain, but they are far from ideal.
In other words, if you plan to watch not only HD movies, then use 720 by 576 pixels as minimum resolution value.
